Upping Their Disinfection Game with Germicidal Ultraviolet Disinfection
During the heart of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Tiger Schulmann’s Martial Arts Studio in Smithtown, NY weathered the same challenges every fitness facility experienced. Through lockdowns, capacity restrictions, and increased safety protocols, Sensei James Leonelli came out the other side with an increased awareness of the health threats facing his industry. He also realized that the disinfection procedure for his martial arts studio needed to move to the next level — especially in the mat area, their high-touch zone. In addition to the hospital-grade liquid disinfection cleaner used throughout his studio, Sensei Leonelli recently purchased our Sanidyne® UV-C Air and Surface Sanitizer. Its 8 STER-L-RAY® High Output UV-C Lamps produce ultraviolet wavelengths at 254 nanometers (nm). This level is lethal to bacteria that may plague martial arts studios, such as Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA, as well as viruses in the air or on surfaces. Since students at Tiger Schulmann’s studio are barefoot and have close contact with each other — especially skin-to-skin contact — this added layer of disinfection is crucial for preventing the spread of disease. A UV-C Disinfection procedure for martial arts studios will treat hard-to-reach areas that liquid cleaning solutions may miss.
I pride myself in always providing a sanitary and safe environment for my students.
—Sensei James Leonelli
What is a Good UV-C Disinfection Procedure for Your Martial Arts Facility?
An effective UV-C disinfection procedure will look different for each martial arts studio. Getting the right germicidal UV dose involves figuring out the necessary time and intensity of UV-C exposure. The good news is that you don’t have to be a mathematician or scientist! Our UV Application Specialists would be happy to perform the necessary calculation to ensure the Sanidyne® model we provide is appropriate for your facility. We can also recommend an appropriate treatment time. Call us at (631) 273-0500 or email Sales@AtlanticUV.com.
Tiger Schulmann’s studio in Smithtown, NY has a mat area that is 1,330 square feet (about 38 feet by 33 feet). There is a support column just off-center (see diagram). Two disinfection sessions were needed to get both sides of the column and all of the mat. Session #1 was 25 minutes and Session #2 was an additional 25 minutes.
